Documenta is regarded as the most important exhibition of contemporary art, drawing attention from all over the world. It was initiated in 1955 by the artist and art educator Arnold Bode in Kassel. After the period of Nazi dictatorship, it was intended to reconcile German public life with international modernity and also confront it with its own failed Enlightenment. Nobody would have thought at that time that the exhibition, often called the One Hundred Day Museum, would become an unparalleled success.
The singular character of the exhibition has been preserved. Every five years, a new director is chosen and the exhibition is reinvented, a concept which to date has been affirmed by the public's interest. The number of visitors has continually risen. Transportation from Kassel to Basel by rail - There are several direct (no changes) trains departing Kassel Wilhelmshoe station to Basel Main Train station taking 4 1/2 hours. There is an ICE (Intercity Express) departing Kassel at 10:16, 10:38, 11:16, 11:38, 12:16 and 12:38 etc. Cost is approximately 102 euros in second class and 164 in first class. From New York, you fly to Frankfurt, then take the train straight from the airport to Kassel, takes about 1/2 hour.

DEPOSIT / CANCELLATION
One night non refundable deposit will be taken March 13. Full refund will be given for cancelations received more than 8 weeks prior to arrival. After that:
8-4 weeks prior to arrival 10% of total due will be charged
4-2 weeks prior to arrival 25% of total due will be charged
2 weeks prior to arrival 50% of the total due will be charged
Less than 13 days there will be no refund.
Due to the scarcity of rooms in Kassel, we are forced to impose a five room limit for any one gallery, and a $100.00 cancellation fee (in addition to the hotel charges noted above) for each room cancelled within one month prior to scheduled arrival.
The Ramada Plaza (built in December 1998) is near the city center at Baumbachstrasse 2. The fair ground "documenta" is only a five minute tram ride away (the tram stops right in front of the hotel). The hotel has 169 deluxe guestrooms on 14 floors, and offers an American buffet breakfast every morning. The restaurant has international cuisine, and there is also a bar/bistro. On the top floor there is a fitness center with a whirlpool, solarium, sauna and steam bath. The hotel also offers the services of a concierge, laundry, and a full business center.
