Weekend getaway, close by, Miami Beach. Just pack a bathing suit and go.

" On the way to Tilcara and Humahuaca, the landscape is unreal, the color tones of the earth, and the huge mountains, are all overwhelming"

"Positano, like Capri is more of a way of life than a tourist destination.  La Marina Grande is the small main beach."

Rafting in the Rio Paquare, Costa Rica was an exhilirating, heart thumping experience

I ticked off another destination on my bucket list and, in retrospect, am finding it hard to determine which vacation I loved more: the South African Safari http://singita.com/ or a recent trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Casa Caribe in the Cayman Islands

By: Esilda Buxbaum

Traditionally, I have taken my family to the Cayman Islands for an annual retreat: just when we’ve had enough of New York winters, often in February, we will fly south and hit the immaculate seven-mile beach in Grand Cayman for some sunshine.

This year, the villa we usually rent was unavailable, which got us to thinking about a nearby resort we had often passed while walking up and down the beach: Casa Caribe. We loved the look of its screened-in porches, something that our villa was lacking—which meant fighting mosquitoes at certain times of the day and definitely eating dinner inside when they were at their fiercest.

When I called Casa Caribe, Sandra answered the phone—Sandra who had long been the manager at the other villa. This was a very good sign. And, indeed, we were very pleased overall with our stay at Casa Caribe. We rented unit #6, a three-bedroom oceanfront villa, which was roomy, comfortable, and well equipped. We found the platters, big bowls, and kitchen utensils we needed and have often missed while on vacation. https://www.casacaribecayman.com

The Georgetown airport is being expanded and upgraded, which is excellent news. In the meantime, when many planes arrive at once, lines can be long to get through customs. But once you are on the other side, seven-mile beach is just minutes away by car. We had time to hit a well-stocked Foster’s supermarket and a liquor store before settling in with gin and tonics to watch the sunset.

While on previous trips we had explored the many tourist activities available—from parasailing and visiting Stingray City to kiss the rays( and get 7yrs of good luck) to touring the turtle farm and taking a trip in a submarine—this time we snorkeled right in front of our villa and the kids did some boogey boarding and body surfing (while the beach was usually quite calm, there a storm was preceded and followed by some impressive waves).

We also took advantage of the grills by the pool and cooked local snapper we had bought at the harbor in Georgetown.

Finally, we did make two new discoveries: Chicken! Chicken!, an independent family-owned restaurant featuring “Caribbean wood-roasted chicken,” which was great for take-out rotisserie chickens and sides, and also Cost-U-Less, a big-box store recommended for bulk items by the woman who cleaned our villa.

Needless to say, Casa Caribe is our new favorite place to stay in what we have come to think of as one of the Caribbean’s best destinations.
